Fantasy Football Draft Tips Round 5

Tight Ends Should Be The Main Focus In All Fantasy Leagues

No matter what type of fantasy league owners participate in, it's important to draft a solid tight end by the fifth round when participating in fantasy football.

After focusing on running backs and wide receivers in the first four rounds of a fantasy football draft, it's important to draft a top tight end while they are still available. Most tight ends may not gain as many points as other positions, but drafting one of the top ones early on can help an owner gain an advantage to help them win each week.

Here are some fantasy football draft tips for when owners reach the fifth round.

Drafting a Tight End in Fantasy Football Leagues

In most fantasy football league's the tight end spot on the roster can be one of the most frustrating positions for any owner. For most owners, it can be difficult to find a tight end that will put up consistent numbers on a weekly basis since their main objective is sometimes blocking. However, over the last couple of years, the NFL has seen a number of teams who use a tight end as an extra wide receiver on the field.

The Dallas Cowboys are a team that is known for taking advantage of tight end Jason Witten's skills as a wide receiver. The 6'5" 262-pound Witten has emerged as one of the best tight ends in the NFL during his six-year career because of his ability to catch the ball.

His skills have made life more relaxing for quarterback Tony Romo, who considers him an extra weapon on offense. In his last two seasons with the Cowboys, he has hauled in 177 receptions for 2,097 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Tight End's Lack of Points in Fantasy Football Leagues

In fantasy football, it can be difficult for an owner to get the desired points from a tight end considering how often the ball is thrown their way. Last season, only nine tight ends finished with more than 600 yards receiving. Not to mention out of the 105 tight ends who recorded a reception last season, only nine recorded five or more touchdowns.

Owners should focus on selecting a top-10 tight end early enough in the draft to gain the advantage over the other members of their fantasy league. Along with Witten, players such as Tony Gonzalez (Falcons), Dallas Clark (Colts), and Antonio Gates (Chargers)--who finished in the top-10 category for receiving yards at their position--are just a few tight ends that should be considered in the fifth and sixth rounds if they are still available.

A solid tight end is similar to having that extra wide receiver in an owner's lineup when it comes to fantasy football. If an owner waits too late, they may be forced to draft a tight end that is used more for blocking--which gets no points in fantasy leagues.

When it comes to tight ends, I think if you take anyone other than Gates or Witten in the fifth round or higher you are crazy. Tight End above all positions is the hardest to predict TDs from year to year. Ask any Chris Cooley or Dallas Clark owners from last year. I would throw Gonzalez into the mix in the top tier but he's going to a team with more weapons and a year older where he's unlikely to see the ball much. So in tier two I would put Olson and Gonzalez where you maybe think about them in the 6th or 7th. But after those four... what the difference is between Winslow, Clark, Cooley, Daniels, Shockey, Zach Miller, Boss Scheffler and Carlson? Right now it's all a guessing game with that group and will probably be pretty even at the end, maybe 1 or 2 points a game one way or the other. So maybe you spend that 5th round pick to grab Gates or Witten but if you don't get them...is it the end of the world waiting till the 10th round and grabbing a third tier tight end? I say no.
