Fantasy Quarterbacks for Week 4

Sleeper Picks And Who To Avoid At QB This Week

Sep 25, 2008 Christopher Maza

Who's got the good matchups this week at quarterback? Who should you stay away from? Well, let's take a look

Quarterback sleepers

These are players who might be on waivers or sitting on your bench that you might want to consider giving a look.

Trent Edwards at St. Louis

Edwards has been nothing flashy, but he has consistently put up respectable numbers and those numbers have gotten better each week. This week, he faces a secondary that has given up the second-most touchdowns than anyone in the league through the air and has yet to have an interception through three weeks.

J.T. O'Sullivan vs. New OrleansAfter a disasterous Week 1, JTO has come back with back-to-back strong showings. He'll struggle against solid defenses, but he's shown the ability to burn the bad ones. Frank Gore will remain the focus of the offense, but O'Sullivan will get his. What is most beneficial for him in this matchup is New Orleans has a weak pass rush. O'Sullivan has thrown for 705 yards, despite getting sacked 13 times. Imagine what he can do if he can stay upright.

Kurt Warner at New York JetsThe Jets' defensive numbers against the pass are skewed because they played teams with weak passing games in the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots. When they played a potent offense, they got burned for 250 yards and three touchdowns through the air. Warner my be on the his way down the other side of the hill, but he's got two excellent play-making receievers and you can't double-cover both of them. One or the other is going to have a big night, which means, of course, a big night for Warner.

Carson Palmer vs. Cleveland

Palmer showed marked improvement in Week 3's loss to the Giants. He still failed to get Chad Ocho Cinco involved in the offense and was sacked six times, both of which are concerning, but he did pass for nearly 300 yards and a touchdown against a defense far superior to the Browns.

Quarterbacks to avoidMost of these are guys who if you're considering starting, you have bigger problems, but this week especially, you should put them on the bench.

Brian Griese vs. Green BayEven if Brian Griese wasn't a bottom-of-the barrel quarterback, this would not be a good matchup. Green Bay has displayed an inability to stop the run, which suggests a lot of work early for Earnest Graham and company. Of course, there's a good chance Aaron Rodgers will victimize the Bucs' passing defense, which has been lackluster thus far, and Tampa Bay would end up playing from behind. That would certainly lead to more pass attempts, but the Packers are tied for third in the league in picks.

Kyle Orton vs. Philadelphia

The Eagles have eaten up mediocre passing games for lunch so far this year. Even despite giving up 310 yards passing to Dallas, they are only averaging 196.3 yards allowed through the air this season and have gotten to the quarterback 13 times. Add to that the fact that Matt Forte is tied for the team lead in receptions and things don't look promising for Orton this season in general.

Ben Roethlisberger vs. Baltimore

Roethlisberger says his shoulder is fine and that may be so, but last week's offensive display was simply terrible and this week he plays the only team in the NFL averaging less than 100 yards allowed in the passing game. Granted, the Steelers are better than the Cleveland Browns or the Cincinnati Bengals, but to expect anything resembling an above-average effort from Roethlisberger is taking quite a leap of faith.

Matt Ryan at CarolinaThe Panthers are the best defense he's seen so far this young season and he's playing outdoors. So far, Ryan has a 127.5 passer rating in the dome against weak opponents, but in his start at Tampa Bay - a defense that is hardly spectacular, either - he completed just 39 percent of his passes and two picks. It's hard to see him doing well against a much better defense.
