Fantasy Quarterbacks for Week 5

Sleeper Picks And Who To Avoid At QB This Week

Oct 2, 2008 Christopher Maza

Who's got the good matchups this week at quarterback? Who should you stay away from? Well, let's take a look.

Quarterback sleepers

These are players who might be on waivers or sitting on your bench that you might want to consider giving a look.

Trent Edwards at Arizona

Edwards did not play exceptionally well last week, but he manages an offense that has done well against weaker defenses so far this season. This week he goes up against an Arizona team that has given up eight touchdowns through the air, tied for second-worst in the league.

Kyle Orton at Detroit

Orton has had multi-touchdown games in back-to-back games against tough defenses. This week, he gets Detriot, a team he has his highest career QB rating against. at 95.0. Detroit's defense has given up a ton of yardage this season and has yet to pick off a pass.

Chad Pennington vs. San DiegoThe San Diego Chargers' defense has looked better, but the fact remains that they are still giving up more yards per game and more touchdowns through the air than any team in football. Pennington is a bit of a risk because he doesn't have a lot of really reliable receivers, but he did complete 85 percent of his passes against a Patriots secondary that has been surprisingly sound in Week 3.

Quarterbacks to avoid

Most of these are guys who if you're considering starting, you have bigger problems, but this week especially, you should put them on the bench.

J.T. O'Sullivan vs New EnglandNew England has problems, but not many of them involve the secondary. In a close game, the 49ers are more likely to look to Frank Gore against a defense whose rushing defense has been a problem. JTO remains the most sacked quarterback in the league and with three former No. 1 picks on the Patirots defensive line, he figures to have a long day in front of him.

Kurt Warner vs. BuffaloTurnovers undid Warner in an ugly, ugly loss to the Jets and the Bills are a much better defense than the Jets. Opposing quarterbacks are completing less than 50 percent of their passes and Anquan Boldin is no lock to play at all with a cracked sinus.

Matt Schaub vs. Indianapolis

Schaub is coming off of his best game of the year and looked a lot more like the quarterback the Texans expected to see this year, but he has a very touch matchup this week. Indianapolis has yet to give up a passing touchdown through four games this season.

Matt Ryan at Green Bay

Ryan continues to not play well outside the dome. In two home games, he's posted a 127.5 passer rating. On the road, that rating drops to 46.9. Atlanta will resort to running the ball early against the Packers' lackluster run defense, but if they fall behind, they may ask Ryan to air it out against a defense that has picked off eight passes this season. Either way, it doesn't make for a big day for Ryan.
