Fantasy Wide Receivers for Week 4

Sleeper Picks And Who To Avoid At WR This Week

Sep 25, 2008 Christopher Maza

Who's got the good matchups this week at quarterback? Who should you stay away from? Well, let's take a look.

Wide receiver sleepersThese are players who might be on waivers or sitting on your bench that you might want to consider giving a look.

Donte' Stallworth at CincinnatiStallworth missed the first three weeks of the season, but is expected to suit up this week in the divisional matchup. When healthy, Stallworth possesses big-play ability, something that the Bengals are vulnerable to. Also, it's possible that Derek Anderson will like having another viable target in the passing game, seeing as how Braylon Edwards has had a major case of the dropsies this season. If you're in bye week trouble this week, he might be worth a taking a chance on.

Vincent Jackson at Kansas CityWhile Chris Chambers has gotten most of the praise because he has found the end zone more frequently, Jackson remains a solid target for Philip Rivers and has a pretty soft matchup. He's an especially good play in point per reception (PPR) leagues. He won't go crazy, but he's a good bet for four or five catches for 60 or 70 yards.

Josh Reed at St. LouisSo far it's Reed, not Lee Evans, who is leading the team in receptions. Evans sees a lot of double coverage and Edwards is the kind of quarterback who will go through his reads to find an open man instead of forcing something and Reed has done well getting open. He should have no trouble doing so against the Rams and could be in line for close to 100 yards and a score.

Ike Hilliard vs. Green BayGreen Bay has a tough secondary, but they will be without All-Pro corner Al Harris and with Joey Galloway out, Hilliard is Brian Griese's most reliable option in the passing game.

Matt Jones vs. Houston

Jones isn't an explosive receiver by any means, but David Garrard likes his ability to go over the middle and catch tough passes. In last week's game, Garrard looked to Jones multiple times when he needed a first down. Jones has caught at least five passes in each ot the first three games of the season, making him another pretty solid PPR play.

Hank Baskett at ChicagoBaskett has the capability of having a big game against a secondary that frankly isn't playing all that well and with Brian Westbrook out, it seems likely that Donovan McNabb will look downfield more often.

Wide receivers to avoid

Most of these are guys who if you're considering starting, you have bigger problems, but this week especially, you should put them on the bench.

Kevin Curtis at Chicago

Some have heard rumors that Curtis will be active for this week's game against the Bears, but to this point, he's only working with the scout team. Even if he is on the active roster by some miracle, he's not going to have much of a role at all.

Robert Meacham vs. San Francisco

Meacham cracks the starting lineup this week for the Saints, but that hardly makes him a good play. It just means the rest of the New Orleans receivers are just as unreliable. There's a reason 31 percent of Drew Brees' completions have found their way into Reggie Bush's hands.

Dane Looker vs. Buffalo

Looker gets the start opposite Torry Holt in St. Louis as part of a major shake-up, but there are so many reasons to avoid him. Most importantly Trent Green is making his first start of the season after the offensive line failed to keep Marc Bulger vertical for three weeks and Buffalo's defense has been pretty tough against the pass so far this season.

Brandon Lloyd vs. Philadelphia

Lloyd is the team's only real threat in the passing game, so he should expect to see a heck of a lot of Asante Samuel, and perhaps some double teams this weekend. He'll have to work for whatever he gets and it probably won't be much.

Miles Austin vs. Washington

After his big week last week, Austin might be seen as an intriguing pick up, but he's not worth much unless someone else gets hurt. Since the Cowboys appear to be healthy, he remains realistically the team's fourth or fifth option in the passing game. Marion Barber is a better bet for both receptions and yards than Austin is.
