Fantasy Wide Receivers for Week 5

Sleeper Picks And Who To Avoid At WR This Week

Oct 3, 2008 Christopher Maza

Who's got the good matchups this week at wide receiver? Who should you stay away from? Well, let's take a look.

Wide receiver sleepersThese are players who might be on waivers or sitting on your bench that you might want to consider giving a look.

Patrick Crayton vs. Cincinnati

Tony Romo re-discovered Crayton last week to the tune of seven passes for 87 yards against a pretty stiff Washington defense. This week, Crayton has a Cincinnati team that has played the pass pretty well, but also hasn't faced a team with as many weapons as Dallas has. Considering their stuggles agains the run, it wouldn't be surprising to see Cincinnati draw up its safeties, opening up the opportunity for some big plays by the Dallas wide receivers.

Wes Welker at San Francisco

With Tom Brady under center, Welker became a must-start in fantasy leagues, but this season without him, he's been a disappointment so far. This, however, could be a big week for Welker as he is expected to draw linebacker Takeo Spikes in coverage quite a bit and Spikes is probably about half the player he used to be. Welker is an especially good play in point per reception (PPR) leagues.

Brandon Lloyd at Detroit

Lloyd remains Bears quarterback Kyle Orton's best option in the passing game and is going up against a very weak Detroit defense. Matt Forte will probably see plenty of work running the ball against the league's worst rushing defense, but Lloyd has managed to get his catches so far this season and should rebound after a rough game against Asante Samuel and the Eagles last week.

Lance Moore vs. Minnesota

The Saints have been so impressed with Moore, that it's been said he might hold onto a starting role after Marques Colston comes back from injury. As good as Minnesota has been against the run, they have been giving up a decent number of yards against the pass. There's no guarantee he'll find the end zone, but he's caught six more passes than any other New Orleans wide receiver and we all know how much they like to throw the ball.

Bobby Wade at New Orleans

Wade had himself quite a game against a good Tennessee defense and this week faces a New Orleans defense that can't stop anyone in the passing game. Gud Frerotte certainly seems to have taken a liking to Wade and he'll continue to benefit from that until Sidney Rice is ready to take on a full workload again.

Wide receivers to avoid

Most of these are guys who if you're considering starting, you have bigger problems, but this week especially, you should put them on the bench.

Steve Breaston vs. Buffalo

Breaston had a very, very good game last week against the Jets, but in reality, he caught more passes in that one game than he's caught the rest of his career. Buffalo's secondary has been very good, so even if Anquan Boldin's head injury prevents him from playing, Breaston is not a good play.

Arnaz Battle vs. New England

Battle took advantage of Bryant Johnson's inabilty to be effective because of his hamstring and had himself a game last week against a very sad New Orleans secondary. New England's secondary is nothing extraordinary, but has still been one of the better units. More likely is the scenario where the 49ers ry to ram Frank Gore down the throat of a Patriots defense that gives up a lot against the run and Battle is really nothing more than the third or fourth receiver.

Matt Jones vs. Jacksonville

Jones is always a good source for receptions and could still be a decent play in PPR leagues, but Pittsburgh is a very good defense all the way around and they get to the quarterback a lot. David Garrard may look for Jones quite a bit as an outlet in this game, but Jones lacks the speed or the moves to break away from good defenders and could have trouble finding daylight.

Kevin Walter vs. Indianapolis

Walter had a very productive two-touchdown effort against Jacksonville last week as the Houston offense finally got going, but he hasn't been a great receiver overall with just seven catches for 56 yards going into last week's game. Expect Week 4's display to be the exception more than the rule and don't count on much of anything against the Colts, who have yet to give up a passing touchdown this season.
