The NFL season is extremely rough and running backs take a lot of punishment. Fantasy football GM's should look at backup RB's this week along with WR's.

Here is a list of the top waiver wire pickups for week 3 in the NFL:

NFL week 3 fantasy waiver pickups

Brandon Jackson-

Had a solid game against the Lions. Not huge fantasy numbers but Brandon Jackson showed a great burst and Ryan Grant is ailing so he is a great fantasy waiver pickup for week 3. The Packers are such a strong offense that Jackson could burst out and have huge games down the stretch if Grant is out.

Darren Sproles-

The Chargers' all-purpose threat might already be taken but if he's not then snatch him up. LaDainian Tomlinson was due for some injuries so they might nag him for a while and even if he comes back Sproles is too fast and valuable to not feed the ball to him 10-15 times a game.

Tim Hightower-

Edgerrin James has not looked good in early-season action and Hightower seems like the heir apparent. Plus, the Arizona Cardinals play so many bad teams in the NFC West that big fantasy games should be a real possibility once this possible fantasy football waiver wire pickup gets full-time reps in the dynamic Arizona offense.

Other week 3 fantasy waiver wire pickups

Justin Gage-

Tennessee appears set to go with Kerry Collins at QB for the rest of the year if that's how long it takes Vince Young to get healthy mentally. Gage is a big target who seems to team well with Kerry Collins making him the perfect sleeper week 3 WR pickup in fantasy football. Do what you can to get him because the Titans have a good defense that can get the offense plenty of opportunities.

Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson-

Also add Arnaz Battle here if you want a one-week rental because the Lions-49ers game will be an epic shootout between two teams with bad defenses and explosive offenses. Bruce has a good rapport with J.T. O'Sullivan so far and Johnson has earned his spot as well making them both week 3 fantasy waiver wire pickups worth looking at.

Shaun MacDonald-

The Lions have a soft part of the schedule coming up and opponents should be keying on Calvin Johnson more. MacDonald is a bit of a risky waiver wire pickup but he has great speed and saw a lot more catches last year working out of the slot. He is still a very talented player who is a good two week rental or so because he's due for a big game soon, perhaps this week when the Lions travel to San Francisco to play the woeful 49ers.

Amani Toomer-

The former Michigan Wolverine is as dependable as ever on third down and in the red zone and the Giants offense has been rolling, making him a timely waiver wire pickup for week 3 right now. Eli Manning has been going to Plaxico Burress a lot but in the red zone he often looks to Toomer because of his precise route running. Take a look at Toomer if you need a third wide receiver in your fantasy league.
